What an amazing year we’ve had at Fort Mac LRA! We are so grateful for the incredible show of support and engagement from our partners and the community in helping us accomplish some great progress in 2016. We hope you enjoy celebrating these milestones, reflecting on our last year, and looking ahead to 2017:
One of the greatest accomplishments of 2016 was the finalization and approval of the Livable Communities Initiative (LCI) plan. Many hundreds of members of the community contributed to the planning process, which began at the end of 2015 and involved dozens of meetings facilitated by our partners – Sizemore Group in association with The Collaborative Firm, Kimley Horn & Associates, Noell Consulting, Mack Cain Design, and Russell New Urban Development – rendering a plan that was then presented to, and approved by the City of Atlanta in May of 2016. This plan will serve as a framework for sustainable development in and around Fort McPherson.
The economic stimulus projected from with the purchase of acreage at Fort Mac by Tyler Perry Studios in 2015 contributed to the recommendations of the LCI plan. As reported in the AJC,
“A draft master plan for the area around Fort McPherson shows potential for denser development on public land at the former Army post and around two nearby MARTA stations and a future leg of the Beltline.
The draft shows there is current demand in the 1,300-acre area to support a grocery store and other neighborhood retail, and more will be stimulated by the future Tyler Perry Studios campus and private investment expected along the future Beltline segment.
It also outlines needed infrastructure upgrades including street extensions, streetscape work, new bike lanes and sidewalks, along with other improvements to make the area safer for pedestrians.”
Community Events and Engagement
Nearly 1,000 members of the community from inside and outside of Fort Mac have enjoyed gathering together to partake in tasty food truck treats while socializing with friends and colleagues during “Lunch at the Mac.” Launched in early 2016, Fort Mac LRA’s popular “Lunch at the Mac” events bring a variety of food trucks to the base to give on-base workers the opportunity to walk over for tasty treats, and invites those off-base to escape for lunch and enjoy the beautiful weather at the historic base. Check our calendar for Lunch at the Mac dates in 2017.
Fort Mac LRA’s third annual Fort Mac Fall Fest featured its largest, most exciting gathering yet. Around 400 community members enjoyed an amazing event with activities presented by a variety of community organizations from art galleries to first responders; a costume contest; music; food and more!
Held in conjunction with the Fall Fest, Fort Mac LRA’s Employment and Career Forum -organized and produced by Urban League of Greater Atlanta, with support from NPU S, Atlanta Metropolitan State College, Atlanta Technical College, Atlanta Workforce Development Agency, Community Church, Community Empowerment Development Corporation, City Councilmember Joyce Sheperd, and City Councilmember Cleta Winslow – was an overwhelming success, attracting more than 200 attendees.
Additionally, Fort Mac LRA has established a regular series of monthly meetings with the Community Engagement Subcommittee; Finance Committee; and Board of Directors, providing an opportunity for collaboration and communication with all of the development’s stakeholders. All are posted on our website calendar, and open to the public to attend.
Real Estate / Development Progress
In support of the anticipated real estate opportunities, Fort Mac LRA made an essential new hire, Arthur Mallard to lead the real estate development efforts. Mallard joined the team as the Director of Real Estate and Economic Development.
In late December 2016, Fort Mac LRA completed construction on the VA Road / Sayer Street Extension, used to access our bungalow properties, and for VA employees and patients to access their domiciliary.
On the real estate front, our team has begun discussions with potential tenants and development partners. We have established a strong foundation for reuse, and look forward to sharing news in this area with you this year.
We have many goals for the year ahead. Of particular importance will be creating more opportunities for our neighbors and community members to spend time at Fort Mac. Please stay tuned for exciting updates, and subscribe to our emails to receive our monthly newsletter and other news.
